Dr. Diola Bagayoko and the Timbuktu Academy were among five recipients of the 2007 Benjamin Banneker Legacy Awards given November 7, 2007 at the 2nd Annual Legacy Awards Gala at the J. W. Marriott in Washington, D.C. The awards, given by the Benjamin Banneker Institute, recognize individuals and institutions that have increased the involvement and achievement of African American students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Dr. Bill Cosby was the keynote speaker for the event. Dr. Bagayoko, the Director of the Timbuktu Academy, is a Southern University System Distinguished Professor of Physics and Statewide Director of the LS-LAMP program.
