AT THE TIMBUKTU ACADEMY
SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY AND A&M COLLEGE,

The Timbuktu Academy and the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies (CEES) are pleased to announce a major support by the Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Research (ONR), for EPC-Timbuktu Academy. The funding level of this project, effective since the Fall of 1993, is $584,034 per year.
(1) Summer Science Institute(SSI) for 40 meritorious high school students (rising 12th graders) (2) Summer Bridge Institute(SBI) for 30 deserving high school graduating-seniors who are prospective Honors Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry majors at Southern University and A & M (3) Undergraduate Research for 20 Engineering, 20 Physics, and 10 Chemistry majors at SUBR (4) Professional Educational Service and Precollege Informational Outreach, State & nation-wide
SSI is a six-week residential program that entail academic enrichments (Advanced Placement type courses in chemistry, English, physics, mathematics, and computer science), ACT preparation, and field trips. SBI is also a residential program. SBI scholars enroll in regular Honors college course, and engage in research.
(a) Deserving college undergraduates (for URP only) that meet the performance standards of the EPC-Timbuktu Academy and are majoring in physics, engineering, or chemistry;
(b) Deserving high school students interested in Physics, Chemistry, or Engineering, to participate in the Summer Programs (SSI for rising 12th graders, SBI and URP for recent high school graduates (SBI and/or URP) and college students (URP only).
Applications are therefore invited from current college undergraduates and from high school students (seniors only for the Summer Bridge Institute and/or URP, 11th grade for the Summer Science Institute).

Up to $5,000 plus other support per Undergraduate Research Scholar (in Phys., Eng., or Chem.) Tuition and Summer Room & Board plus $1,000 research stipends per Summer Science Institute Scholar.
Requirements: Minimum high school GPA of 3.0/4.0 and minimum ACT of 24 out of 36 for incoming freshmen; College GPA of 3.0/4.0. While 24/36 or a better ACT score is not required from SSI students, SSI applicants must take the ACT or SAT and submit a report of their scores with their application.
