at the Timbuktu Academy (SETA) is a four-week, non-residential program for
rising 9th grade students. (Participants must be entering 9th grade in the
fall.) The program aims to enhance participants' preparation for high school
and to pursue studies in science, mathematics, and science-related disciplines.
SETA is designed to facilitate the transition from middle school to high school
and to better prepare students for the crucial mathematics and science courses
they must undertake. The program stresses hands-on, minds-on science and mathematics
exploration and the development of cognitive reasoning and test-taking skills.
SETA participants will have academic instruction in Mathematics (Algebra I
or Geometry, depending on previous courses taken); Science (Physical science
with an emphasis on Physics and Chemistry); English (Grammar, Vocabulary and
Writing); Computer literacy (primarily data analysis and presentation, and
use of the Internet as a tool for data-gathering); and cognitive skill development
(reasoning and test-taking skills).
Students will be
provided lunch at Mayberry Dining Hall. Some afternoons, participants will
take part in recreational activities.
